Gender Reveal

A gender reveal party is a celebration of pregnancy to reveal the baby’s sex to the expectant parents, family, and/or friends. Paint, Cake, Glitter, Balloons and everyone gathered for the fun sounds great but this is not always possible. In our case, we would had to find a way to share the long awaited news with friends and family thousands of miles away. After 2020, this problem became a reality for more families even when they lived closer together.

So, why have a gender reveal? Well in short, people are excited and would like to gift you items for baby, straight curiosity and society expectations. Of course, you are free to choose and sharing is not for everyone. You might even keep it a secret for yourself. Sharing the gender is not a necessity, clothing can be gender neutral and people can wait. It doesn’t hurt to use an excuse to have a party or fun activity. We wanted to have some fun with it and share.

For Emi, we made bath bombs with a pink center and blue/pink sprinkles on the outside. At the time, we couldn’t find them premade and it took a lot of trial and error to get them just right. We did rounds and little houses too. They were all wrapped and shipped to our closest family. We also made a video of us doing the bath bomb for those that didn’t get one. The results were so much fun! Everyone enjoyed it regardless of age and were thankful that they were included in the fun.

For this baby, my original idea was to send iced cookies through the mail but with pandemic shipping delays, we decided against it. Anything that included mailing was axed since we worried about timing and handling.

Since baby was due so close to halloween and we love all spooky cute things, we thought of ways to reveal the pregnancy and gender with some spooky fun.

We ended up making a potion for the pregnancy reveal and had a few pounds of dry ice left over. We quickly added some red and purple water activated lights to the cauldron which made the “fog” glow. After we made the secret baby potion, we let the girls play witches for a while. They added glitters to the potion and colored water to help the smoke grow. They were laughing the whole time and played for a solid hour.

Seeing them so happy and excited to share their baby sibling with the world was heartwarming. We all had fun and enjoyed putting together a small video to share. The DIY portion of these is particularly bonding when older siblings are involved. Every once in a while now, Emi asks to play witches and she always lugs the cauldron behind her.

For any expat or families away from family, I think a video is fun alternative to a party. Work with your budget and have fun celebrating your little bundle of joy.

In our case, another little witch is joining the coven and will make her arrival soon. We can’t wait to meet her!
