Journey to a better diet

I can’t begin to tell you what a struggle changing our diet has been. As I cut out some things from my life, I try not to remove them completely. I believe all extremes are bad, for example eating salt is bad but not eating salt is also bad. I used to eat anything offered to me (except insects 🤣) and I enjoyed it. About a year ago, I was placed on heart failure risk monitoring due to my thyroid levels. If the pandemic wasn’t a thing, I would have been sent to the ER. This prompted me to change some key things.

In order to reduce the risk, I have reduced caffeine. That hurt my soul. I absolutely love the taste of coffee but it is also an emotional attachment to my deceased grandparents. It was particularly hard to stop after being caffeine fueled for years. I switched to chai tea in order to reduce caffeine but avoid withdrawals. Occasionally, I will still enjoy a cup of coffee but from countless cups of coffee a day, I reduced intake to 1 cup of coffee and then to 1 cup of chai tea. If you don’t enjoy chai, try black tea! It really helps control withdrawals.

Milk is another substitution we tried, including cow, almond and pea. I try to rotate the milk throughout the month.  I also make our own milk with a mix of seeds and nuts. love adding pistachio and baru nuts. The good thing about making your own milk is that you can control the amount of sugar and additives.

It does not matter why you are making changes in your diet, try different things until you find something you love. Food is not only an important part of a balanced diet; it is also one of our main routes to pleasure. It is also important to have the support of your family as making a single meal for everyone is by far easier than making two.
