Let’s go to the beach

Going to the beach with kiddos doesn’t need to be hard. If you are a single parent and have multiple kids, the outing might seem like a challenge. I’m here to tell you, this is just a mental challenge. You can definitively take the kids by yourself.

What do you really need for a few hours at the beach?

  1. Backpack, the bigger the better
    • The bigger, the better! Try to carry everything within your backpack in order to have your hands free.
  2. Sunblock/Sunscreen
    • Apply before the car ride and again every 60-90 min (depending on the product)
  3. Toys
    • Bucket, pails and molds are great to entertain kids and they usually come as a kit. If you can tie the bucket to your backpack by the strap, even better. Nature is a great accessory to your kit: sand, sticks, shells, leaves, algae, etc. Before walking back to the car, fill your bucket with water and clean everyone’s shoes right at the car door; this will help reduce the amount of sand going into the vehicle.
  4. Towels
    • Great for cleaning teary eyes, drying after a good splash and protecting your car seat from absorbing water. Once dry, change kiddos into the clothing they had on top of their swimsuit. Keep clothing & extra undies in the car to avoid them getting wet. Your load will be much easier too.
  5. Bottle of water
    • The sun, heat and physical activity can cause dehydration therefore keep yourself and the kids hydrated. About 2 hours before hitting the beach, make sure to drink water. This will help keep you hydrated at the beach. Once at the beach, drink about a tablespoon at a time to avoid cramps. If your kiddo refuses, offer again a few minutes later. If you or the kids feel dizzy, tired or lightheaded then it’s best to return home.
  6. Snacks
    • Don’t overthink this, you won’t need a whole lot. Avoid any salty snacks and carry foods that will keep you hydrated: watermelons, strawberries, peaches and oranges are great options.

Depending on location consider the following:

  1. Umbrella
    • If you are in need of shade, this is an easy way to bring some with you. Compact and easy to carry and will be extra helpful in case of rain.
  2. Stroller Wagon
    • If you can afford it and frequent the beach, a wagon is a great alternative to a traditional stroller. Wagons can carry 2 – 4 kids, include shade and some storage. The wheels are usually bigger which is quite helpful when pushing and pulling on the sand. It is definitely not needed but can make your life easier.
  3. Lunch
    • If staying over 3 hours, you might want to consider a meal option for everyone. Keep this easy and if you can, inside the car until necessary. Consider: a pasta salad made with olive oil and plenty of veggies, granola bars, popcorn and veggie chips. Even easier, grab some lunchables and keep them inside an insulated bag with a frozen ice pack to avoid them getting spoiled.
  4. Cash
    • It’s good to carry some cash in case of unexpected parking fees, snacks and emergencies.
